INTERVIEW WITH THE BAND FROLIC

1.) To kick things off: Tell our audience a bit about the origin story of your Band.

Quick note, I’m answering these questions as Elijah Post, the drummer for Frolic. The other guys weren’t available today, sorry to say. Edgar started the band in 2014 as the band’s original drummer! Weirdly enough he wasn’t able to find guitarists so he ended up switching over to guitar and has practiced at least an hour a day in the 10 years since and it really shows. The early days culminated with the release of our First EP ‘Cry of the Demon’ which I remember spinning while on break at my day job well before joining. Edgar convinced me to join in 2020 after the previous lineup had mostly gone their separate ways. In 2022 as a three-piece we released Fusion of Spirits, our first full length and Lenny, our other guitarist joined soon after. Now 3+ years later, the four of us are full-swing into promoting and supporting this new record!

2.) If you had to describe the sound of your Band to someone who hasn’t heard you yet: What would you say?

Assuming the person we’re talking to has some basic working knowledge of metal, I would describe us as in a sweet spot between modern technical aggression and classic thrash songwriting. For every Vektor moment, there’s a Van Halen moment. As a project, we’re interested in seeing how far forward we can push the genre while staying true to what it brings out in all of us.

3.) How has the songwriting evolved with the band over the years? What does that process look like for you lately?

Everything we’ve put out so far carries with it some level of technical challenge that forces us to push ourselves to the next level. Counterbalanced against that drive is a desire to write genuinely good hooks and songs. It’s so easy for a technical band to get caught up in its own technicality at the expensive music while we enjoy showcasing the fruits of our commitment to our instruments, nothing can get in the way of delivering music that moves both the heart as well as the mind.

4.) What was the inspiration for your band name? What meaning does it have behind it?

In keeping with the trend of mid-10’s, thrash bands naming themselves in reference to classic thrash, Frolic comes from the Death Angel album “Frolic Through The Park.” Funny enough, I didn’t even realize this reference until I had been in the band for a year.

5.) What are some of the recurring themes or messages you find yourself exploring in your lyrics?

In the same way that we blend the warmth of classic metal with the angular precision of modern metal, our lyrics tend to explore spaces between the technological and the human. Our new record is very sci-fi in its theming, yet one of our lead singles is about healing from trauma with minimal technological reference outside the visual aesthetics. To me, it all makes sense because technology can create trauma.

6.) What is one song you’ve written that you feel captures the absolute core identity of the band?

I think it differs depending on which member you ask, but off this most recent album, I’m particularly proud of “Where The Spiders Sleep.” Musically it covers a lot of ground while staying relatively concise in its four-and-a-half minute duration, with multiple setpiece moments and transitions. The lyrics both cover alternate dimensions as well as the real-world concept of cyberattacks. Each of us brought multiple influences into the song, and it’s why you get a soaring power metal guitar solo in the same song as blast beats and blackened vocals.

7.) Do you find your energy translates better in an intimate club style venue or a massive festival setting?

Rock ‘n’ roll is scalable. There’s one energy for an intimate room and another for a gigantic venue. It’s all about the relationship between yourself and the crowd no matter what size the crowd is. If you treat the crowd with respect, which may look different depending on the physical environment, then you tend to see that energy reciprocated.

8.) Which show performance stands out as your all time favorite? is there a specific reason?

While I love a small intimate show, one of my all-time favorite shows was played opening for Suicidal Tendencies and Possessed at the UC theater in Berkeley, CA in 2023. We played to a massive crowd, and a great number of friends and supporters from our local scene came out that night and celebrated with us. It was like something out of a movie! You can watch the full set on YouTube!

9.) Which Artists or Band inspired you to be in a Band?

For me personally, I’ve wanted to play music my whole life. My mother is a solo oboist and she’s been playing for more than 50 years. I started getting into metal when I was 13 and played my first couple of shows a little after my 18th birthday. Then shortly after that it all stopped for about five or six years. When I joined for all my goal was simply to get back up on stage. A small room on a Tuesday night would be fine, just to prove to myself that I could do it. Everything that has happened since is a total delight and a bonus!

10.) If you could sit down and collaborate with any Artist or Band right now, who would be at the top of your list and Why?

This answer depends on which member of the band you’re talking to and what emotional state they’re in. We have so much love for so many artists both in the metal scene and another genres. Throwing out a couple names, however, Revocation, TBDM, Crypta, if you need an opener, we’re here haha!

11.) What’s the current Pulse of the Metal Scene from your perspective?

Alive and doing extremely well. Dark music tends to soothe the soul in darkness, and the sad reality of our time is that many of us are living in darkness. In the Bay Area, there are bands in every sub-genre, and for the most part everyone loves and respects one another. There is a great deal of cooperation and collaboration between bands which I’m so happy for.

12.) Are there any endorsements or gear brands you’re currently working with that you’d like to shout out?

If you’re in the Bay Area, check out Music Depot in Hayward. Amazing music shop run by our homies. And they offer lessons too, including from Edgar who teaches guitar there!

13.) What does your tour calendar look like? Any big shows or festivals we should be made aware of?

Slay tuned 🙂

What is your very first Metal album you ever bought ?*

For me it was The Black Album, followed shortly by Toxicity. Those albums were life-changing to a 14 year old lol.

14.) What was the very first metal concert you ever went to?

System of a Down at Shoreline Amphitheater in 2011. Then I saw Iron Maiden just a few months later. I think I was hooked after that.
