1.) To kick things off: Tell our audience a bit about the origin story of your Band.
Falsimonian started in 2014, when Erick and Jesus started composing music together after wanting to collaborate for many years. Some months and a couple of songs later, it was time to look for more band members. That’s when Cesar and Moritz joined to complete the lineup at the beginning of 2015.
2.) If you had to describe the sound of your Band to someone who hasn’t heard you yet: What would you say?
Our music is Melodic Death Metal with strong influences of Latin American Music, and Jazz. The music has a good balance of heavy guitar riffs, headbanging grooves, melodic hooks, brutal vocals, virtuosic passages, and interesting harmony. For fans of Opeth, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom, Mors Principium Est, Born of Osiris, Daath, Allegaeon, Killswitch Engage, and Dream Theater.
3.) How has the songwriting evolved with the band over the years? What does that process look like for you lately?
Our songwriting process for this EP was very unique! Since we live in different states, we wrote all the songs from a distance. While there were a lot of virtual meetings, the songs were largely written “asynchronously” – One day Erick would write entire lyrics of a song, another day Jesus would write instrumental sections of a song and send a demo to Erick. Erick would come up with the vocals and record vocal tracks, and the ideas would bounce back and forth until the song was flowing from beginning to end. The virtual meetings would then be to discuss details (specific rhythms / production choices / arrangement choices between sections, etc.). What started as an experiment in songwriting from a distance quickly turned into a 5-song EP!
4.) What was the inspiration for your band name? What meaning does it have behind it?
When looking into band names, it took us a while to find a name that convinced all of us. It wasn’t until we started looking into words that meant something like deception or lies that we landed on the latin word “falsimonia”, which means trick, deceit, or imposition. We felt this word fit very well with the lyrical themes of our songs, but we decided to modify the word to make it our own by adding the letter “n” at the end, and that is how the name Falsimonian was born.
5.) What are some of the recurring themes or messages you find yourself exploring in your lyrics?
Some recurrent lyrical themes in our songs are about dystopian settings. However, we explore those settings seen through the lens of the mundane everyday life. How would it be living every day doing the most mundane tasks while living in one of these dystopian worlds?
6.) What is one song you’ve written that you feel captures the absolute core identity of the band?
This is a very tricky question! If you listen to the EP from beginning to end you’ll notice that each song is extremely unique and they each showcase different parts of our inspirations. I think we both have different answers so here goes our choices: Jesus: I think Freefall is a great example of what we were looking to do. The song showcases groovy riffs, aggressive vocals, a strong chorus, Latin American rhythms, and some instrumental shredding. Erick: I believe Freefall is the song that captures what we started hoping for the band to sound and also to express through the raw emotion of it. But I also think the title track, For Survival captures where we may be going in the future, exploring different emotions, while expanding what the mix of Latin American rhythms with death metal, and bringing in different elements.
7.) Do you find your energy translates better in an intimate club style venue or a massive festival setting?
We’d like to think that our energy would be a great fit for massive festival settings! It’s all about headbanging grooves and sing-along energy for us.
8.) Which show performance stands out as your all time favorite? is there a specific reason?
We’ve yet to play live as a band, but we’re planning some shows soon.
9.) Which Artists or Band inspired you to be in a Band?
Jesus: Dream Theater! I still remember the first time I saw a live video of them – I couldn’t believe the level of musicianship in the whole band. It really made me want to learn an instrument and get good at it. Erick: I would have to say that bands like Dark Tranquillity or Opeth are some bands that both musically have inspired me a lot, but also the charisma and personality of the band members have been an inspiration for how a band can be both imposing but also easygoing at the same time.
10.) If you could sit down and collaborate with any Artist or Band right now, who would be at the top of your list and Why?
Jesus: I am inspired by way too many artists. Devin Townsend, Rafael Trujillo, Tatiana Shmayluk, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Spiro Dussias, Jason Richardson, Jose Macario, and Cameron Losch, amongst many others. Erick: There are many artists that I can think of, but a few at the top of my list would be Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth, Jonas Renske from Katatonia, Devin Townsend, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Arjen Lucassen, Einar Solberg, Andy Gillion, Cammie Gilbert, among others
11.) What’s the current Pulse of the Metal Scene from your perspective?
The metal scene is alive, but it certainly has been hit on many ends. From the ever-changing music industry to the fan base getting older. But it is a genre that refuses to die, and little by little, younger audiences keep coming in, keeping the genre alive.
12.) Are there any endorsements or gear brands you’re currently working with that you’d like to shout out?
N/A
13.) What does your tour calendar look like? Any big shows or festivals we should be made aware of?
We are planning our first performances ever for the end of this year! We will be starting out with a short run of shows, but please be on the lookout for more news.
14.) What is your very first Metal album you ever bought ?
Erick: It must have been Hatebreeder by Children of Bodom Jesus: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden
15.) What was the very first metal concert you ever went to?
Erick: One of the first metal concerts I went to that marked me was Children of Bodom touring with Trivium and Amon Amarth in San Antonio, TX more than 20 years ago. Besides watching some of my favorite bands at the time, me and a group of friends took a long road trip and it was the perfect blend of chaos and aggression. After this experience, going to live shows became addictive. Jesus: Dream Theater with Trivium around 2011 in Austin, TX. Amazing show by both bands!
16.) Where’s the best place for fans to keep up with you and dive into your community online?
You can find us across multiple social media as Falsimonian, but the top 3 would be Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
