FROM THE CATACOMBS: Viande on Decay, Dread, and Monument aux morts

1. To kick things off: Tell our audience a bit about the origin story of your Band.

I started the project in 2014. B joined me shortly after. We then released two demos (an untitled one in 2015, followed by “À la mort !” in 2017). We recruited a drummer around 2018 and began working on an album. In 2020, Transcending Obscurity showed interest and released “L’Abîme décore les âmes.” G joined on bass, and we started playing live shows. Subsequently, we faced various issues that complicated the band’s progress—health problems, psychiatric hospitalizations, a fight that tragically led to a stroke, and so on. But ultimately, we managed to finish “Monument aux Morts,” which is being released today.

2. Tell us about your new project?

“Monument aux Mort” is the culmination of several years of work. Many people contributed to the composition, joining and leaving the band along the way. Some paid a heavy price for this project, sacrificing both their physical and mental health. But here we are, at last.

3. If you had to describe the sound of your Band to someone who hasn’t heard you yet: What would you say?

We’re trying to create music reminiscent of Clod Meat Industry productions—so, dark ambient, industrial, and the like—but using the instrumentation and approach of death metal.

4. How has the songwriting evolved with the band over the years? What does that process look like for you lately?

It’s B, the guitarist, who composes the music; it is then arranged and performed collectively. As the band members have evolved over time, so has our sound.

 5. Outside of metal, what books, Video Games, movies, or life events leave a mark on your music?

We primarily listen to extreme metal and noise-based genres—such as noise, harsh noise, power electronics, dark ambient, industrial, and electronic music—but also, in my case, some free jazz and minimal techno.

6. What are some of the recurring themes or messages you find yourself exploring in your lyrics?

All the texts deal exclusively with death.

7. What is one song you’ve written that you feel captures the absolute core identity of the band?

I don’t know.

8. Do you find your energy translates better in an intimate club style venue or a massive festival setting?

We haven’t played in very large venues very often. The last time was at Prague Death Mass in Prague, and it was great—we really enjoyed it. But honestly, it’s rare. We mostly play in small venues, and that suits us well.

9. Which Artists or Band inspired you to be in a Band?

As for me, the bands that inspire me are the projects released by Cold Meat Industries, but also Teitanblood, Funeral Mist, Portal, Antediluvian, Necros Christos, Incantation, Autopsy, Immolation…

10. If you could sit down and collaborate with any Artist or Band right now, who would be at the top of your list and Why?

We’re currently working with a jazz musician. We love unconventional collaborations. We’ve played shows with bands like Sister Iodine, Magrava, and Treha Sektori; we really like putting together lineups that share a common aesthetic but break away from the “all-death-metal” mold. There’s nothing more tedious than a concert featuring four bands of the exact same genre—eventually, you can’t even tell them apart.

11. What’s the current Pulse of the Metal Scene from your perspective?

I don’t know. We are quite far removed from the “scene” and have little contact with it.

12. Are there any endorsements or gear brands you’re currently working with that you’d like to shout out?

No

13. What does your tour calendar look like? Any big shows or festivals we should be made aware of?

No major festivals are on the horizon; a series of concerts in Europe and France is planned for the end of the year.

14. What is your very first Metal album you ever bought ?

The first metal album I bought was Sepultura’s *Roots*, right when it came out. But I had listened to metal before that; it’s just that this time I had the opportunity—I was at a record store with my pocket money (I was 13 when it was released).

15. What was the very first metal concert you ever went to?

The first metal band I saw… I can’t recall—it was surely a small local band from my hometown. But I do remember the first major extreme metal concert I saw: Carpathian Forest and Behemoth in Paris in 2000 (at the time, Behemoth were opening for Carpathian Forest and had just released *Satanica*… they’ve certainly come a long way since then!).
