1. To kick things off: Tell our audience a bit about the origin story of your Band.
Wyrmhaven started a few years ago when a couple friends just wanted to reconnect. It was just a time when we wanted to play riffs and eat some pizza. We wrote about 7 or 8 songs and just kept them in a hard drive. Fast forward about a year later, we were going to se our friends in gatecreeper play in Phoenix, and we got into a car accident that changed our perspective on things. We decided we have nothing to lose, so we got the rest of the band together, finished our first EP delirium, and here we are now.
2. Tell us about your new project?
Seasons of Gloom is our current album. Our first full length, actually. It’s an album that we feel takes you on a journey from start to finish. The album is about loss, grief, imagery, and things that we are all currently feeling throughout the world. It’s also about hope. It’s everything we love about heavy music. We wrote it to pay homage to all the bands before us, and hopefully carve our own path.
3. If you had to describe the sound of your Band to someone who hasn’t heard you yet: What would you say?
That’s a tough one, because we have everything from death metal, tech metal, prog, early metalcore, melodic death, and everything in between. Best is probably melodic metal, but we don’t want to put ourselves in box, and want to write what feels right.
4. How has the songwriting evolved with the band over the years? What does that process look like for you lately?
Nick would mostly write everything at first, but as the band changed and evolved, we wrote the album together. Nick would bring ideas and we would work on them. Stephen would then rework, make it have soul, groove. Keith brings a keen ear and feels as well. When Travis joins Wyrmhaven we decided to rewrite the entire album, scrap some songs, and start over again, because it was the right thing to do. He brought melodies, technicality, solos, and ambience to the group. Now we blend all our ideas and what’s best for the songs wins.
5. Outside of metal, what books, Video Games, movies, or life events leave a mark on your music?
We love different things in this band. Travis and Keith love to read, everything from vegan cookbooks to lord of the rings. Stephen has been known to play some Helldivers, Red Dead Redemption. Keith is an avid WWE connoisseur. Nick was huge into Destiny 1 and 2, also love warhammer miniatures.
6. What are some of the recurring themes or messages you find yourself exploring in your lyrics?
There’s a lot about struggles within. Grief, loss. Catharsis through sound. There’s hope in there somewhere.
7. What is one song you’ve written that you feel captures the absolute core identity of the band?
There’s so many, from melodic to heavy. It’s hard to pick just one. Exuviate really started it for us from our EP, but with our singles, and the record, there’s so much. We can let everyone decide what would best describe us so far!
8. Do you find your energy translates better in an intimate club style venue or a massive festival setting?
We bring a lot of energy to our live performances, and we hoped to capture that with our record. We believe Ryan at Homewrecker did just that, and Zack did a killer job making it hits hard. Unfortunately we haven’t played a massive festival yet, but we sure hope to one day. So for right now an intimate club setting.
9. Which Artists or Band inspired you to be in a Band?
We all pretty much started as kids to listened to pop punk, emo, hardcore so we gradually moved into the heavier realm of things as we grew older. There’s a lot from Mars Volta, The Acacia Strain, Trivium, In Flames, The Black Dahlia Murder.
10. If you could sit down and collaborate with any Artist or Band right now, who would be at the top of your list and Why?
We would all pick different artists for many different reasons. If we could pick someone right now, it would be Courtney Laplante because she is an absolute killer front woman and vocalist. Also Joe Duplantier.
11. What’s the current Pulse of the Metal Scene from your perspective?
Starting to see more metal bands in bigger and mainstream festivals. Love to see bands like Gojira doing massive stadiums with Metallica. Also when bands help each other bands is huge. Legendary bands like Bleeding Through helping put us on the map by sharing our music. We need more of that, because there are amazing bands out there.
12. Are there any endorsements or gear brands you’re currently working with that you’d like to shout out?
Shout out to Bare Knuckle Pickups, Fortin amplifications and SJC drums!!!! Absolutely love them all.
13. What does your tour calendar look like? Any big shows or festivals we should be made aware of?
We are currently setting up some shows in AZ and looking to book to regional and west coast dates in the near future.
14. What is your very first Metal album you ever bought ?
That’s tough but it’s probably Limp Bizkit Chocolate Starfish and the hot dog flavored water.
15. What was the very first metal concert you ever went to?
We all went to different ones, but the first big band we played with, or opened up for was Darkest Hour.
