Interview with the band Hyperdump

1. What is your Band Name? Hyperdump

2. To kick things off: Tell our audience a bit about the origin story of your Band.

Hyperdump is a French modern metal band formed in 2007. Nearly two decades later, we’re still driven by the same passion for creating heavy, modern music while continuing to evolve with every release. The original line-up included members of a former heavy metal band who wanted to create something much more modern. Since then, we’ve released three albums and one EP, always experimenting and drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical genres.

3. If you had to describe the sound of your Band to someone who hasn’t heard you yet: What would you say?

I would describe it as modern and unconventional, ranging from heavy riffs to catchy choruses, with progressive interludes along the way. It’s not easy to classify because we have a wide variety of influences and like to blend different sounds. If we had to name a few influences, we’d probably mention Strapping Young Lad, Faith No More, with touches of metalcore and progressive metal.

4. How has the songwriting evolved with the band over the years? What does that process look like for you lately?

These days we tend to focus more on writing songs that are effective, especially from a live performance perspective. We usually write together during rehearsals. One of us brings a riff or an idea, then we jam around it. The rest comes quite naturally, and we build each song step by step.

5. What was the inspiration for your band name? What meaning does it have behind it?

We simply wanted something that sounded modern and cool. It’s short, easy to remember, and doesn’t have any particular meaning.

6. What are some of the recurring themes or messages you find yourself exploring in your lyrics?

Our previous release, The Weak Man, was a concept album built around a deep fictional story, with guest vocalists portraying different characters. Our latest album, Weird Stories from Dumptown, doesn’t follow one central theme, although our lyrics often explore human emotions and our place in society. That said, we also enjoy writing lighter and more humorous songs, like Pimple Junkie Boy… but we’ll let you discover that one for yourself!

7. What is one song you’ve written that you feel captures the absolute core identity of the band?

It’s difficult to pick just one, but I’d say Until Death. That opening track combines most of the elements that define our sound: atmospheric choirs, layered guitars, catchy riffs, samples, and sound effects.

8. Do you find your energy translates better in an intimate club style venue or a massive festival setting?

I think it depends more on the context than on the size of the audience. If I had to choose, I’d say we’d rather play bigger stages or festivals. However, some of our best live shows have actually taken place in smaller venues because the audience was incredibly receptive. The overall conditions also matter a lot: the sound quality, the atmosphere, the people… Recently we played a small club in Limoges where the sound was amazing, the audience really seemed to enjoy the show, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It was a fantastic experience for the whole band.

9. Which show performance stands out as your all time favorite? is there a specific reason?

I’d probably say our show opening for Agnostic Front in Creil. The stage and the sound were excellent, we received a very warm welcome, and there was a great crowd. It was a real privilege to open for such legends, and they turned out to be incredibly kind and approachable. Definitely one of our best memories!

10. Which Artists or Band inspired you to be in a Band?

As I mentioned earlier, I’d say Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend, and Faith No More. It may be less obvious, but bands like Soilwork and even Meshuggah have also influenced us in different ways. Some of us have also been longtime Iron Maiden fans.

11. If you could sit down and collaborate with any Artist or Band right now, who would be at the top of your list and Why?

Probably Devin Townsend. We love the intensity of his music and the fact that he always comes up with incredible ideas. Collaborating with him would be an amazing experience.

12. What’s the current Pulse of the Metal Scene from your perspective?

I think there are many outstanding modern metal bands today, and the overall technical level keeps getting higher. On the other hand, at our level it has become much harder to get live shows or even gain visibility online. Everything seems to be monetized nowadays. Of course, music has always been an industry, but it definitely feels more difficult than it did when we were younger.

13. Are there any endorsements or gear brands you’re currently working with that you’d like to shout out?

We don’t currently have any endorsements, but we’re definitely open to opportunities!

14. What does your tour calendar look like? Any big shows or festivals we should be made aware of?

We don’t play live as often as we’d like. We’re currently looking for new shows and festivals, and we’ll make sure to announce them on our social media.

15. What is your very first Metal album you ever bought ?

For me, it was Metallica’s Black Album. It was their latest release at the time, and it was a real revelation.

16. What was the very first metal concert you ever went to?

If I remember correctly, it was Vanden Plas in 1999, in a medium-sized venue in the city where I was studying. I have great memories of that show. They’re exceptional musicians.

17. Where’s the best place for fans to keep up with you and dive into your community online?

Definitely our Facebook page. I’ll include the link below!
