Interview with Osiah

(1) Could you tell our readers about your band OSIAH? What kind of music do you perform, when was it established, etc.?

Osiah started in 2013 after a previous project, Humanity Depraved, came to an end. Like most bands, we’ve gone through a few lineup changes along the way, but the group we have now feels like the strongest and most focused version of the band so far.

We play deathcore at our core, but we mix in a lot of different things. There’s a good amount of straight death metal in there, along with darker atmospheric ideas and a lot of energy. People often put different labels on us like technical deathcore or blackened deathcore, but to us it’s just our take on deathcore and what feels natural when we write.

Since starting out, we’ve released several records, toured throughout the UK and Europe, and kept trying to push ourselves both musically and emotionally. It has been a long journey from where we began, but it has shaped what Osiah is today.

(2) Which bands or artists inspired you to play music?

We all pull inspiration from a really wide range of artists, and a lot of them aren’t even metal, which usually surprises people. If we had to name a few, it would be bands like The War on Drugs, Fleetwood Mac, The Midnight and Gary Numan, alongside heavier influences like Metallica, The Acacia Strain, Thy Art Is Murder and Cult of Luna. It’s a pretty mixed list, but that variety definitely shapes how we write.

(3) Who came up with the cover art for the EP AION?

The artwork for AION was hand drawn by Shindy Design. He’s been doing all our album covers since Loss, so it felt right to continue working with him. Without giving too much away, the AION cover is actually part of a larger piece of artwork that will make more sense in the future.

(4) Who wrote the lyrics for your new EP, how did they come to be?

Lyric responsibilities are held by vocalist Ricky, lyrics and vocal recording are typically done last as he likes to have the instrumentation complete before beginning. Each song tells a story and so it’s important for him to understand the dynamic of a whole song in order to narrate appropriately; reflecting the instrumentations energy.

(5) Who created the logo for the band, and who takes care of the graphics and the website?

We’ve had a few designers create different versions of our logo over the years. The main Osiah logo was designed by Megan Mushi, who also did some of our early merch and the artwork for Terror Firma. The newer sigil was created by Oched Artworks, and Shindy Designs made some adjustments to it as our artwork evolved from Loss into Aion.

As for the website, I handle that myself. I look after the design, updates and general maintenance.

(6) How many Shows have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether (Venues or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

We’ve played a lot of shows over the years, so it’s hard to put an exact number on it. When it comes to what we prefer, both venues and festivals have their own thing, but festivals definitely stand out because of the sheer scale and energy.

Some of our favourite tours have been with Cattle Decapitation, Cytotoxin, Necrotted, To The Grave and The Faceless. Festival-wise, Summerbreeze and Bloodstock were huge highlights for us and easily some of our best performances.

(7) What is your songwriting process?

We do almost everything from home. We start by demoing ideas on our computers with programmed drums and bass. From there, we refine the songs together in our group chat, sending ideas back and forth until we’re happy with the structure. Once things feel close, Roper records vocals over the demos. When a song is about 90 percent there, we head into the studio to track the real instruments like drums, bass and guitars.

For AION, the process was a bit different. We only had one song fully finished when we went into the studio (Chrysopoeia). The other three tracks were around 70 to 80 percent done, so we actually finalized them while we were there. Honestly, those ended up being some of our best work.

(8) How would you describe your band’s single “Within the web”?

Loosely controlled chaos and brutality.. ‘Within the Web’ above all is another exploration into our creativity, trying something new whilst clinging on to the core elements that define Osiah’s sound.

We included this song in our set on our latest tour, and the things we learnt from doing so have inspired our future writing.  It is the precursor to a greater exploration within our music.

(9) What are the main themes or messages in your lyrics?

Each album was wrote as a chapter in life and of the trauma experienced by our vocalist in his youth, now that these stories have been told, our current themes are of finding strength and peace in these current days.  Ricky writes of what he cares most about, and often songs are wrote of Osiahs journey and their plans for the future, with sprinklings of the art he consumes at the time.

(10) Do you have endorsements that you want to talk about or share?

Only current endorsements we have are sE Electronics and T-cymbals!

(11) Would you like to share any shows or festivals coming up?

Currently, we don’t have any shows for end of 2025 or 2026.
