Interview with DEPRAVITY

(1) Could you tell our readers about your band DEPRAVITY?What kind of music do you perform, when was it established, etc.?Depravity was formed in 2016 from the ashes of our previous bands which had been active here in Perth since 1997 or so. We’ve known each other long before the band started so it was quite easy to work together. The band plays Death Metal- sometimes brutal and fast, sometimes technical. There’s diversity within our sound despite the fact we slot formly into the DEATH METAL category.

(2) Which bands or artists inspired you to play music? For me personally, it was the bands I heard when I was a young teenager in theearly 90’s. Motley Crue, Jimmy Barnes, Jonnhy Diesel, whatever was broadcast on the Tv music shows. Then later I heard Anthrax, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Darkthrone, Immortal and my mind was made up.Extreme metal was the ultime and I couldn’t understand why the genre wasn’t more popular! I guess that’s the way the cookie crumbles…..

(3) Who came up with the cover art for the album Bestial Possession?
The cover art was made by Paulo Girardi from Italy. An excellent artist notorious within the Metal scene. We were confident he would do an exceptional job so we got him on board.

(4) Who wrote the lyrics for your new album, how did they come to be?
Lyrics were written entirely by our vocalist Jamie Kay.Morbid tales of Death, Murder, Depravity, Psycopathy and violence, inspired by thesavage tone of the music. Simple timeless and EFFECTIVE!

(5) Who created the logo for the band, and who takes care of the graphics and the
website?
The logo was made by long time friend James Cambell, a stalwart within the Perth metal scene. Graphics on online stuffs are generally handled by our label Transcending Obscurity, but I also do some things myself, Youtube thumbnails, posters, basicphoto editing etc(6)

(6) How many Shows have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether (Venues or festivals) and which of your performances would you consideras the best?
We’ve performed about 70 shows as Depravity within Australia, but collectively we’re played about 400 shows in various bands dating back to the 90’s I also play drums for Singapore’s IMPIETY and Dubai’s NERVECELL and they’ve afforded me the opportunity to play in 27 countries throughout the world. Places like India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Dubai, USA, South America, Bangladesh,The Philippines to name a few. Always a blast.Big local support slots are usually the best, the crowd is always guaranteed and the energy is high.Australian festival shows are great also. It gives us a chance to perform with bands from other states and people who maynot otherwise see us.

(7) What is your songwriting process?
The songs are written by guitarists Jarrod and Lynton, then the entire band comestogether to tweak certain aspects. Each guitarist has their own songs so the style change can often be quitenoticeable between tracks. The guitarists don’t tamper with each others songs too much, that can becometricky, so it’s easier just to let them follow their individual visions.

(8) Can you tell us about the name of the new album? What’s the Inspirationbehind it?
Not too much to say really, the album title was decided once we saw the artwork. The concept being demonic entities possessing unwitting humanplebs, and secretly sending the human race into insanity, so Bestial Possession sounded cool and fit that concept well.

(9) What are some of your favorite current metal bands?
I don’t listen to many new bands, mostly stuff from the 80’s and 90’s, but I have to shout out Psycroptic, Skeletal Remains, Origin, Maleific Throne, Absu, Putridity, Impiety, Deathhammer and Mayhem, all brilliant brutal bands!

(10) Do you have endorsements that you want to talk about or share?
Ha! No endorsements to speak of.It’s not really important for us now, and the discounts are often not great enough to bother with. It’s great that we can mix it up and play anything that we want without being locked into a deal, which often ain’t great anyway.

(11) Would you like to share any shows or festivals coming up?
We actually have no shows lined up, for the first time in a long time, but surely upon the release of the album we’ll get busy and play throughoutAustralia in 2026. Perhaps some in Asia too as it’s relatively close. We live to play live, and shows must be booked!(12)
