“Encrypted” by Nightmare (Album Review)

Nightmare Encrypted album cover

Nightmare, the French metal stalwarts, have been a pillar in the European metal scene since their formation in 1979. Over the decades, they have not only survived but thrived, constantly evolving and refining their sound. With their twelfth studio album, “Encrypted,” they continue this legacy, boldly pushing their boundaries and embracing a more diverse sonic palette.

The album opens with “Nexus Inferis,” a track that sets a dark and atmospheric tone. The intro is haunting, gradually building up to a ferocious explosion of riffs and Barbara Mogore’s powerful vocals. It’s a perfect encapsulation of Nightmare’s new direction: a blend of traditional power metal with modern extreme metal influences. “The Blossom of My Hate” showcases the band’s ability to balance aggression with melody. The riffing is sharp and relentless, while the chorus soars, thanks to Barbara’s dynamic range. It’s a testament to their craftsmanship, creating a song that’s both brutal and beautiful. “Voices from the Other Side” Here, Nightmare delves into the more melodic side of metal. The harmonized guitars and catchy hooks make this an instant standout. Saviours of the Damned” An epic anthem that highlights the band’s ambitious approach on this album. The orchestral elements and intricate guitar work create a grandiose atmosphere, making it a definitive power metal masterpiece. Barbara’s voice shines brightly, delivering each line with conviction and intensity. “Wake the Night” is a relentless assault on the senses. The drumming is particularly impressive here, driving the song forward with unyielding energy. The guitar work on this track is defiantly something to take notice of.

“Encrypted” The title track is a complex and multi-layered piece. It’s a journey through different metal subgenres, seamlessly blending them into a cohesive whole. The production is top-notch, highlighting every nuance and layer of the composition. This track encapsulates the essence of the album: diverse, ambitious, and unrestrained. “Incandescent” Shows no sign of slowing down. The emotive guitar solos and melancholic melodies are a highlight, showcasing the band’s versatility. Barbara’s vocal performance here is hauntingly beautiful, adding a sense of vulnerability to the album. “White Lines”The riffs are razor-sharp, and the rhythm section is thunderous. This track is pure, unadulterated metal, with no compromises. It’s a headbanger’s delight and a reminder of the band’s roots in the traditional metal scene. Borderlines” is a fantastically emotional track, both musical and lyrical. I get caught up in brilliance of the technical aspects of this song. There is so much to enjoy on this track. “Eternal Winter (2023 Version)” Closing the album is a reimagined version off 2009’s album Insurrection. “Eternal Winter” is given new life with modern production and Barbara’s powerful vocals. It’s a fitting end to the album, tying together the band’s past and present in a triumphant conclusion.

“Encrypted” is not just another album in Nightmare’s extensive discography; it’s a statement. With Barbara Mogore at the helm, the band has reached new heights, delivering their most ambitious and varied album to date. The production is impeccable, the musicianship is top-notch, and the songwriting is both innovative and true to their roots. I dare you not to bang your head on this album!

For fans of Nightmare and metal enthusiasts alike, “Encrypted” is a must-listen. It’s a brutal, yet beautiful journey through the many facets of metal, showcasing a band that is not afraid to evolve and push their own boundaries. Nightmare has once again proven why they are a cornerstone of the European metal scene.
