Till The Dirt, delivers a stunningly audacious, genre-blending release with “Outside The Spiral” (Album Review)

The legacy of Kelly Shaefer, the voice and instrumental might behind the death metal juggernaut ATHEIST, sets high expectations for any of his musical endeavors. His latest project, Till The Dirt, delivers a stunningly audacious, genre-blending release with “Outside The Spiral.”

The debut album is not merely a new chapter in Shaefer’s storied career but also an artistic exploration that strays from the norms. “Outside The Spiral” balances the raw brutality of death metal with an unexpected confluence of grunge, jazz rock, black metal, classic pop, and even traces of dark wave. This cocktail of genres proves to be a bold step that further broadens the borders of extreme music.

Opener “Starring Role” is a scorching opening statement, evoking images of mosh pits, with a clever mixture of blast beats, well timed solo’s and sonic intensity. The album’s title track, “Outside The Spiral,” is a masterclass in melding genres, songwriting, with some impressive guitar work and adventurous rhythmic changes the chorus has been stuck in my head for days.

“Privilege” offers a solid metal foundation, topped with hauntingly expressive guitar work that immediately stands out, making it one of the album’s highlights. The diversity continues with “As It Seems,” which leans into an Alice In Chains feel, while retaining a sinister edge.

“Invitation”, “Forest of Because” and “Who Awaits” are potent, energizing tracks, inflected with the distinct experimental touches that characterize this album. “Insist And Demand” and “The Good, The Bad, The Other” are both brutal powerhouses, reminding listeners of Shaefer’s roots in death metal.

“Watch You Grow Old” and “Bring On The Gods” wrap up the album nicely with a solid blend of the band’s entire palette, capturing the essence of this innovative record.

The production quality is top-notch, a testament to Nuclear Blast Records’ commitment to quality. It makes the mix of disparate styles mesh well, without any one genre overshadowing the others.

In “Outside The Spiral,” Till The Dirt dares to experiment where few others have. Shaefer’s gives birth to a fresh sound that is sure to leave it’s mark on the metal scene. The album is an exciting, unpredictable rollercoaster that takes listeners on a wild ride from start to finish. This album is clearly not what I expected. It’s Better!
